JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – Tonight, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) released the following statement after being selected as the Republican nominee for the November general election:

“I’m grateful for East Tennesseans’ continued support and trust, and I don’t take it for granted. Clarinda and I thank you for the faith you have placed in me. While I’m fortunate to have a national platform as chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I will always put the citizens of East Tennessee first. You are who I serve in Congress.

“Two years ago, East Tennesseans were worried about the direction of our country and finding work. Over the last eighteen months, working with President Trump, we have restored hope in the future. Whether it’s ensuring our great veterans have access to the care they have earned, standing for the right to life, moving real solutions to address the shortcomings in our health care system, securing our border or fighting for hardworking families to keep more of their pay, we’ve kept promise after promise to the American people. Still, there is much to do and much at stake this November.

“Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have made it clear they want take away the tax cuts we fought with President Trump to deliver. They want to reverse my accountability law that allows the president and his administration to fire or discipline bad VA employees. They want to enact a single-payer health care system we cannot afford that has failed miserably in other countries and they want to do away with ICE and open our borders. Simply put, Democrats are running on an agenda to undo all the progress we’ve made to improve the lives of every American. If re-elected, I will continue to be a strong, conservative voice for you in Congress. As the top-ranking Republican on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairsm, I will continue our work to reform VA so no man or woman who has served this country has to worry about whether or not they can see a doctor or get the benefits they have earned. As a physician, I will work to implement real and commonsense health care reforms so care costs less and we have transparency in our health care system. I will fight to keep our booming economy on track, support balancing our budget and getting our fiscal house back in order and help advance President Trump’s agenda in any way that I can – including providing additional funding for the wall at our southern border. We’ve made progress to change the direction of our country, but there is so much left to do.

“I hope to earn the vote of every East Tennessean in the coming months. This is not a responsibility I take lightly and you can rest assured I will never forget who I work for.”
